Recipe Details:
In the accompanying photos, I’ve utilized our hard red wheat flour, but you could seamlessly substitute it with hard white wheat flour. Here’s a glimpse of how I made them:
- Mix whole wheat flour, yeast, and salt in a bowl for the dry ingredients.
- In a glass measuring cup, combine hot water with honey, stirring until dissolved.
- Add the water/honey mixture to the dry ingredients, incorporating the whisked egg and oil, then knead the dough for a full 10 minutes on the counter.
- Place the kneaded dough in an oiled bowl, covering it to prevent drying, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 2 hours until it doubles in size.
After the initial rise:
- Scoop the risen dough, divide it into 8 portions, shaping them into balls for hamburgers or a longer form for hotdogs.
- Place them on a baking sheet, cover with a towel, and let them rise again for about an hour, depending on the warmth of your area.
For sesame seed toppings:
- Whisk together an egg and water, brush the top of the dough, sprinkle sesame seeds, and bake for 10-12 minutes in a preheated 400F oven.
- Optionally, brush the tops with melted butter after baking.

Versatile Dough Recipe:
This simple dough recipe isn’t just limited to hamburger buns; it can also yield a delightful loaf of bread. Shape the dough into a loaf, place it in a metal bread pan, let it rise, and bake for about 35 to 45 minutes in a preheated 350F oven until golden brown and sounding hollow when tapped.
