Do you want to WOW your guests at your next BBQ?

Well next time you invite everyone over for grilled hamburgers, serve them on homemade hamburger buns!  They are simple enough to make and can be made ahead and then warmed up on the grill before serving.  Want to grill hot dogs instead?  With this bun recipe you can shape them for hamburgers or hot dogs.  It’s a simple enough touch but not something you see done very often these days.  Your guests will certainly take notice and enjoy the wonderful flavor!  Plus, you’ll know that the buns are made from whole wheat flour without any chemical additives or preservatives.

Whole Wheat Hamburger Buns Recipe

 

  • I mixed together the dry ingredients of whole wheat flour, yeast and salt in a bowl and set it aside.

  • Then I took a glass measuring cup, filled it with 1 1/4 C hot water straight from our tap, added the honey to it and stirred until the honey dissolved.

  • I added the water/honey mixture to my dry ingredients, added in the whisked egg and oil and started kneading the dough after it came together. I like to knead the dough on the counter for a full 10 minutes, adding more flour when the dough becomes too sticky.  *This is an important step as the kneading is what helps to develop the gluten. 

  • Then I pop the dough into an oiled bowl and make sure a little oil is on top the dough so it doesn’t dry out.

  • I cover the bowl with plastic wrap or use a pot lid that will fit over the bowl and place it somewhere warm for about 1 to 2 hours until it doubles in size.

  • After the dough rises, just scoop it out of the bowl and divide it into about 8 portions.  You can roll them into balls for hamburgers or into a longer shape for hot dogs.  Place them on the baking sheet, cover with a towel and let them rise again for about an hour. It just depends on how warm your area is as to how fast your dough rises.

  • If you want sesame seeds on your buns, then you can whisk together an egg and some water and brush the top of the dough.  Then sprinkle the seeds on top and bake for about 10-12 minutes in a 400 F preheated oven.  If you want, you can brush the tops with melted butter when they’re done baking but that is totally optional.

And there you have it - fresh baked hamburger buns.  You might want to make extra so that you have some to toast for bacon, egg & cheese sandwiches in the morning too!

Oh, and this simple dough recipe can make a loaf of bread as well.  Instead of forming it into hamburger buns, shape it into a loaf and place it into a metal bread pan.  After it rises a little bit over the top of the pan, bake it in a preheated 350 F oven for about 35 to 45 minutes or until it starts browning on top and sounds hollow when tapped.

In these photos, I’ve used our hard red wheat flour but you could use hard white wheat flour as well.  I’ll enclose a recipe card but let me tell you how I made them.
